massive book hunt request!
Please recommend to me:
1) Any books you think I might like!
- particularly in the categories of sci-fi and fantasy
- I have always been wishy washy about fantasy until G-g-g-GAME OF THRONES came and changed my life. Just about finished Dance of Dragons now and have to fill the void! So more or less made up historical dramas with slight magicky twists would be perfect.
- Are there any Game of Thronesesque books that take place in an Avatar: The Last Airbender type universe?!?!? Because that would basically be ideal.
- I also dislike military sci fi, and I’m way more into social commentary stuff than hard tech stuff. For some reason I’ve never gelled with Neal Stephenson or William Gibson though I like the idea of cyberpunk?? Lol I am impossible to please. I am open minded about steampunk as well but have yet to find a novel I wanted to read more than one or two chapters into.
- (I have downloaded the Dune books and Ender’s Game and some other classics, would definitely like some RECENT stuff)
- particularly in the sub categories of YA sci fi and fantasy. I have a bunch of Kindle samples I just grabbed from the YA sci fi section on amazon but recommendations would be great. I know and love Hunger Games and Feed so similar books possibly? I did not care for Tamora Pierce but would be willing to give her another shot.
- general literature is okay too I guess. I have the Corrections because Ewan McGregor is in the HBO pilot for it and I have to PREPARE MYSELF.
- I don’t usually read non-fiction but have been getting more into it! Give me something to learn about! No math or computers please. I like Naomi Klein but it’s not exactly like she challenges my worldview lol. Our education has left sizable caps in my knowledge of history as well.
- (Livejournal/dreamwidth only request: any m/m porno ebooks that are best?? The ones I’ve taken chances are have all been sorely disappointing.)
2) Books about feminism!
My journey into feminism came from blogs and being mad at movies. Help me build my feminist to-read list? On my list of authors so far is:
- Octavia A Butler
- bell hooks
- Betty Friedan
- Simone de Beauvoir
Any other feminist SF authors? Also I have read and enjoyed Shulamith Firestone but racism in my feminism turns me off. Feminist critiques OF feminism and other left-wing concepts would be great too.
3)Books about spirituality!
I am suddenly swept up in spiritual curiosity! I am more or less atheist and don’t plan on changing that but would like to learn more about the world’s religions. I have been reading mostly about Buddhism so far and have gotten lots of free e-books but any suggestions would be great.
(FULL DISCLOSURE: I was thinking about my next tattoo and I kind of want it to be Guanyin, the Chinese goddess of mercy, and I felt I needed to do a lot of reading before I made that commitment, especially as an atheist.)
- like honestly, if you belong or have ever belonged to any kind of faith and it has a main text let me know because for some reason I am blanking on more than like four faiths that I can name for some reason.
- “beginner’s guide to ____” is also something I’m looking for.
- Obviously many faiths don’t necessarily have central texts but a beginner’s guide would be wonderful.
- I was raised Catholic and let me tell you, I was fervent in my youth, so that arena is basically covered lol.
-I also have Richard Dawkins and some others downloaded and I’m not really looking for more of that type of stuff. But perhaps books about doing drugs kind of belong in this category?? Not novels so much as first-hand accounts of weird drugs, Doors of Perception style!
4) Two specific areas of research!
a. The life of historical Catholic nuns living in convents? Specifically in places other than Europe? Lol?? (I still totally want to read about historical convent life in Europe though) I would also take nuns of other faiths IE Buddhist nuns which I am not finding much mention of so far. This is for a different project than my sudden spiritual curiosity.
b. Social history of Winnipeg? Particularly the life of Asian-Canadians in early 20th century Winnipeg? Also, did prohibition affect Winnipeg?????
